Methodology

Expert Estimation is a First Principles Resource Based Estimating system, meaning that the costs for each Direct Cost Schedule (Bill of Quantities) item and Overhead Cost (indirect or preliminary) item are built up using a series of Resources in a Cost Estimate.

A resource may be either a Base resource or Group (complex or assembly) resource. Base resources are the lowest level resource such as a length of pipe, an hour of labour or a tonne of gravel. Group resources are resources that are made up from an estimate that may contain base resources and other group resources. An example of a group resource may be the supply and installation of a pump. The estimate for this group would, of course, contain the supply of the pump, some labour to fix the pump in place, perhaps some crane time to position the pump, an electrician to connect it to the power supply and a plumber to connect the pump to the pipe work. Whenever the group resource is used in an estimate, all of the resources that the group resource contains are included in the items resource usage.

Some advantages of using a first principals estimating system are:

  • It enables you to obtain a true analysis of all of the resources required to complete the project.
  • The cost estimate for all items may be readily audited and is fully justifiable, supported by the processes required to complete the task.
  • Changes made to your resource rates are carried through to each item and group resource that uses the changed resource. You can be confident that all areas that may be affected by the change will be automatically adjusted. A change in the cost of a resource in an alternative system that allows values to just be "typed in" can be a hit and miss affair.
  • By utilising resource libraries your projects can be estimated consistently based on the cost of using your resources to perform the work, not just the individual skill of the estimator to get the numbers right.
  • After winning a tender the original cost estimates can form the basis of your project's forecast estimate cost to complete when the estimate is imported into Expert Project.

A Brief Look at Expert Estimation’s Estimating Process

Expert Estimation allows you to either manually enter or copy in a Direct Cost Schedule (Bill of Quantities) from a client. A Takeoff calculation sheet is available to calculate the quantities for each work item and transfer the quantities back to the schedule.

Each Direct Cost Schedule item has a Cost Estimate window which allows for a full resource based estimate to be developed. These estimates may be as simple or complex as required and can include Group (complex or assembly) resources which provide almost infinite flexibility for your estimates. Complex calculations are facilitated using a wide range of in-built formulae, locally and globally available defines (variables), and in-line spreadsheet style calculations.

Overhead (indirect) costs are estimated in a similar way to direct cost items, these along with your profit margin, Risks and Opportunities and contingencies etc are Spread across your Direct Cost items, producing your projects Selling Rates and Submission Schedule.

After submission of the tender and being awarded the job, your complete estimate can be imported from our on-site project cost management system, Expert Project, for use on site, or the data from the reports or windows may be quickly copied or exported to any other standard Windows® application via the Windows® clipboard or via Microsoft Excel®.

The areas mentioned above are only a fraction of the comprehensive features that make Expert Estimation second to none for estimating your projects.
